Many prisons have programs to help inmates complete their education, which aids in a successful transition back to society.

A variety of mental health professionals and trained counselors help offenders successfully rejoin society after serving their sentences.

Caseworkers and counseling specialists are needed at all government correctional levels to work with inmates, especially those whose sentences are coming to an end. Caseworkers manage an offender’s case from sentencing to release. Counselors with different qualifications deal with inmates in specific areas, such as substance abuse, family problems, and employment.

As they reenter society, inmates face special challenges brought about by their time in confinement and their criminal records. Some people—including close relatives—will treat them as outcasts, even after they’ve served their time. It may be harder for them than for other applicants to obtain jobs. While they enjoy a great sense of freedom upon release, they also face stresses in adjusting to a lifestyle that’s very different from what they’ve experienced behind bars. Many released offenders are unable to cope and, all too soon, return to the corrections system. This is called recidivism. Trained counselors can help them make successful transitions back to society.
